Who can help me choose the right Medicare plan?

Navigating the world of Medicare can feel like trying to solve a puzzle where the pieces change every year. With various “Parts,” “Plans,” and “Alphabet Soup” terminology, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Choosing the wrong plan can lead to unexpected out-of-pocket costs or the loss of access to your favorite doctors.

Fortunately, you don’t have to make these decisions alone. There are several professional, unbiased, and free resources available to help you compare options and find the coverage that fits your health needs and budget.

1. State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

If you are looking for unbiased, one-on-one counseling, your first stop should be the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP is a national program funded by the federal government that provides free local health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries and their families.

  • Why they are helpful: SHIP counselors are trained volunteers or staff members who do not sell insurance. This means they have no financial incentive to push one plan over another.

  • What they do: They can help you understand the difference between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, assist with “Extra Help” applications for prescription drug costs, and help resolve billing issues.

2. Licensed Insurance Agents and Brokers

Insurance agents and brokers are professionals licensed by the state to sell insurance products. They are often the most accessible resource for those who want a guided enrollment experience.

  • Independent Brokers: These professionals typically represent multiple insurance companies. Because they work with various carriers, they can show you a broad range of plans available in your specific zip code.

  • Captive Agents: These agents work for a single insurance company (e.g., UnitedHealthcare or Humana). They are experts on that specific company’s products but cannot offer you plans from competitors.

  • A Note on Costs: In most cases, you do not pay a fee to an agent or broker. They are compensated by the insurance companies through commissions.

3. Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE

The official government resources are more robust than many people realize. The Medicare Plan Finder tool on the official website is a powerful resource that allows you to input your specific medications and preferred pharmacies to see exactly which plans will cost you the least over a full year.

If you prefer speaking to someone, the Medicare helpline (1-800-633-4227) is available 24/7. While they won’t tell you which plan is “best” for you, they can provide factual information about any plan’s star rating, coverage limits, and costs.

4. Benefits Administrators (For Retirees)

If you are retiring from a job that offers retiree health benefits, your best resource is your Human Resources (HR) department or your union benefits administrator. Many employer-sponsored retiree plans work differently than standard Medicare plans. Joining a private Medicare Advantage plan without checking with your former employer first could result in losing your retiree benefits permanently.

Helpful Resources

Choosing a plan is a significant decision, but by utilizing these resources, you can move forward with confidence. Remember, the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) is your yearly opportunity to review these choices and ensure your coverage remains the best fit for the year ahead.
